Rosacea
Rosacea is a common chronic skin condition characterized by flushing and skin redness on the face. It can start off with easy blushing, followed by chronic redness, and in the later stages is known as full blown rosacea or acne.
Who Gets Rosacea?
Approximately 14 million Americans are estimated to be affected by rosacea. It typically develops in a person’s 30’s or 40’s, and reaches its peak during their 40’s or 50’s. Rosacea tends to affect fair skinned individuals, although it has been seen in darker skinned people as well.
What Causes It?
Doctors do not know the exact cause of rosacea, but it is believed that some people inherit a tendency to develop it. It is also thought that people who blush more frequently may be more likely to develop rosacea. Some researchers say that rosacea is a disorder where blood vessels dilate too easily, resulting in the flushing and redness.
The factors that cause one person to flare up may not have the same effect on another person. Some people claim that one or more of these factors have aggravated their rosacea: heat (including hot baths), strenuous exercise, sunlight, wine, very cold temperatures, hot or spicy foods and drinks, alcohol consumption, menopause, emotional stress, and long term use of topical steroids on the face, though these factors have not been well-researched.
Is There A Cure?
Though there is no absolute cure for rosacea, there are are effective treatments for tempering it. With any of these treatments, it can take weeks or even months before a patient notices improvement in the skin. Treatment could also start with avoiding factors that aggravate the symptoms.
What Treatments Does Laser Esthetica Have Available To Help Rosacea?
Your specialist may choose to use a topical antibiotic, such as metronidazole, or in more severe cases prescribe an oral antibiotic instead. Minocycline is a common antibiotic used to treat rosacea.
Certain skin care regimens may also help calm the skin. During your consultation, you can go over a customized treatment plan for you and suggest a skin care program to help you achieve the best results.
Fotofacial (IPL) treatments have been shown to result in a 50-75% improvement for rosacea, flushing, ruddy complexion, broken capillaries and spider veins in the face. These treatments are painless with no downtime and are typically done in a series over several weeks.
